Virtual Reality changing the way we view Adelaide Oval

Adelaide Oval is highly regarded as one of the most picturesque sporting venues in the world. Along with drawing thousands of cricket and AFL fans every year, there is much more that Adelaide Oval offers outside of hosting sporting matches. With a range of different spaces that can accommodate groups from 25 all the way up to 1500, there is a function and event space for almost every occasion.

The Adelaide Oval function and events team were concerned that their existing presentation methods didn’t accurately demonstrate the capabilities of the facility to prospective clients. They needed a better way to show the potential of those rooms and how they may be set up for different types of events.

In a united vision, two WISA members combined their talents and expertise to help solve this problem and have created the Adelaide Oval Virtual Reality Tour.

Lateral Vision and Tucker Creative worked collaboratively to bring this unique and innovative way to bring function rooms to reality. Tucker Creative, an Adelaide-based strategic, design and advertising agency is focused on creating brand and communication solutions, achieving outstanding results for our clients. Lateral Vision is a startup based in Adelaide that creates interactive and immersive experiences using technologies such as virtual and augmented reality.

Using CloudTour, the virtual tour platform developed by Lateral Vision, virtually anyone interested in booking a function or event space can now view Adelaide Oval from anywhere in the world using a computer, mobile phone or VR headset. No special apps or hardware are required. Simply by visiting the site in most web browsers, users can begin to explore the venue. This particular CloudTour was built around four key objectives:

  • Explore the different functions rooms of Adelaide Oval;
  • Change the room setup using a toggle feature to alternate view between the differently configured rooms;
  • Information icons to highlight key features of rooms;
  • VR capability using cardboard headsets.

The tour starts with an aerial 360-degree image captured by a drone. Here, users gain a birds-eye view of the oval and see the locations of the various function rooms in relation to the oval and stands as interactive markers. The aerial view also serves to show interstate and international visitors the close proximity of Adelaide Oval to the CBD and reinforces the notion of Adelaide Oval being widely regarded as one of the most picturesque sporting venues in the world.

At ground level, the William Magarey, Ian McLachlan and Cathedral Rooms have been captured in multiple configurations, so by simply pressing a toggle button, the room view changes between banquet, conference and meeting setup. This means that when a client makes a booking, they will see exactly how the room may be set up.

This technology is easily adapted to any venue seeking to promotes its full potential. If you’re looking for a way to make your winery, facility or event space stand out, look no further than engaging with WISA Members, Tucker Creative and Lateral Vision to produce a virtual tour offering a unique experience and immersing people in your story.
